A Paddle up the Rio Istiam, Isla Ometepe

One day, me and my compadres took a trip up the Río Istiam – a tranquil waterway that meanders inland at the isthmus between Ometepe’s two volcanoes, Concepción and Maderas. The river is home to abundant bird life, caimans, turtles and herds of indolent livestock. Many thanks to Jennifer Kennedy and the three Matts – Barwick, Hicks and Ashford, who appear in this video clip.

Hi – really enjoy your video of the the Rio Istiam paddle – gives a real feeling of the atmosphere – wind blowing etc and the slightly curious trees with plants or vines growing all over them. Great stuff!

so, how dangerous is this since there are caimans in the river? I am asking because I am going there and was looking into kayaking the istiam

This is absolutely safe. Caimans are much smaller than crocodiles and very shy. They are not known to attack people. In fact, they are quite hard to spot.

Caballitos del Mar in Merida is the best place to get kayaks. Good luck on your caiman hunt.
