Catholic sentiments reach a fervent peak in Nicaragua during the Purísima, a festival entirely devoted to the Immaculate Conception of Mary. Lasting from late November to 8th December, the Purísima is a protracted celebration involving various family and church gatherings, as well as spirited street parties.
In Granada, the Virgin is carried aloft in a variety of processions. Such is the scene depicted in this short film, shot on the humble street of Calle Cuiscoma, which runs from the city market past our home and towards the lake.
Traditionally, the Purísima is a time when families construct small home altars dedicated to the Virgin. These are visited by groups of singers after 6pm on the 7th and 8th of December, when the festival reaches its climax. Untold fireworks, too, are ignited at the allotted hour. Thus the Purísima is as much a time of thanks and modest worship, as it is an occasion of raucous outbursts. Viva María! Viva la Virgen!
