Nicaragua’s Río San Juan department is one of the most remote and entrancing regions in Central America. Home to the Indio Maíz nature reserve, this lesser visited region is an untamed backwater of impenetrable rainforests and ramshackle settlements. As a ‘mini-Amazon’ that empties three major rivers and 17 tributaries into the Caribbean sea, it is rich in wildlife and exotic flora. But it’s historically rich too. As an important natural canal between the Pacific and Atlantic oceans, the San Juan river has long attracted outside interest, including adventurers like Lord Nelson, Henry Morgan and Mark Twain. These images were snapped on a journey from the jungle gateway of San Carlos, downstream to the historic fotress of El Castillo.
