Nicaragua’s Caribbean Coast Slide Show
Divided from its Pacific cousin by vast tracts of rainforest, Nicaragua’s Caribbean coast has an entirely unique flavour. English, not Spanish, is the lingua franca, thanks to historic British trade ties that brought arms and tools to the native Miskitos. Today, the Caribbean side enjoys its own politics, staunch identity and traditions. It is more Afro-Caribbean than Hispanic in character, and many inhabitants shun the Latino culture that dominates the rest of the country. These photos were snapped at various locations throughout the two vast departments that comprise the area: The Southern and Northern Atlantic Autonomous regions. From the shambolic port of Bluefields to the idyllic sandy Corn islands, and beyond, to the remote outpost of Bilwi, Nicaragua’s Caribbean coast has a distinctly ramshackle and indolent character.
