Michoacán Slide Show
Mon, Aug 24, 2009
The mysterious and often overlooked state of Michoacán, western Mexico, is rich in earthy textures and soaring colonial architecture. The grandiose university city of Morelia, the weathered town of Patzcuaro, the ethereal Monarch Butterfly reserve and the archaeological site of Tzinzunzan – these sights and more feature in this slide show. As the former heartland of the Tarascans – a formidable war-like people and sparring partner of the Aztecs – Michoacán is also a major craft centre and bastion of indigenous lore. The Purepecha, directly descended from the ancient Tarascans, are one of Mexico’s most vibrant ethnic groups; their spirited celebrations of Day of the Dead draw tourists from around the world.
